WHAT IS PSILOCYBIN AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound found in certain species of mushrooms. For thousands of years, Indigenous and traditional cultures have used psilocybin in ceremonial and healing practices, guiding individuals through experiences of self-discovery, spiritual connection, and emotional healing.
When ingested, psilocybin leads to an altered state of consciousness that can reveal the deeper parts of the mind. Various things can arise such as enhanced emotional awareness of suffering and vivid experiences of meaning and connection. In modern times, research has shown that psilocybin, when used in supportive and structured settings, may help people navigate depression, anxiety, trauma, and end-of-life distress.
HOW IS PSILOCYBIN THERAPY DIFFERENT FROM OTHER MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENTS?
Psilocybin therapy takes a unique approach by combining the therapeutic use of a psychedelic medicine with guided support and integration. Unlike daily medications that often aim to suppress or stabilize symptoms, psilocybin therapy invites participants to explore the meaning behind their experiences and move through difficult emotions with compassionate guidance.
While talk therapy can be deeply valuable, it sometimes struggles to access the deeper layers of the mind that are necessary for transformation. Psilocybin, in a safe and supportive setting, can open doors to emotions, insights, memories, and perspectives that are often hard to reach through therapy alone — offering an opportunity for profound healing and moments of spiritual connection and meaningfulness.
IS PSILOCYBIN SAFE? ARE THERE ANY RISKS?
When used in a controlled, supportive environment with trained professionals, psilocybin is generally considered safe for most people. Research has shown that it carries a low risk of addiction and a favorable safety profile compared to many other substances. However, like any powerful therapeutic tool, psilocybin is not without risks. Some individuals may experience challenging emotions, anxiety, or confusion during a session, though these effects are typically temporary and can be supported through preparation and integration.
It’s important to note that psilocybin may not be appropriate for everyone, particularly those with a personal or family history of psychosis, bipolar disorder, or certain medical conditions. At Rose Healing Center, we prioritize thorough screening and preparation to ensure that each participant can engage with this medicine safely and meaningfully.
WHAT ARE THE COSTS, AND DOES INSURANCE COVER PSILOCYBIN THERAPY?
Currently, insurance does not cover the cost of the psilocybin journey itself, as it is not yet an FDA-approved treatment. However, some of our facilitators are licensed mental health professionals who may accept insurance for preparation and integration sessions. Because insurance coverage can vary by provider and plan, we recommend reviewing individual facilitator profiles to learn more about their specific offerings and insurance acceptance. At Rose Healing Center, we strive to make this work accessible while honoring the regulatory landscape that shapes its delivery.
CAN I CONTINUE MY CURRENT MEDICATIONS WHILE UNDERGOING PSYLOCYBIN THERAPY?
This is an important question, as some medications can interact with psilocybin or even reduce its therapeutic effects. Lithium, in particular, is contraindicated with psilocybin due to the risk of dangerous interactions, including seizures. Additionally, many medications that affect serotonin — such as SSRIs, SNRIs, and certain antipsychotics — may blunt the effects of psilocybin, making the experience less impactful or even ineffective.
At Rose Healing Center, we carefully review each participant’s medication list during the screening process to ensure safety and help create a plan that maximizes the benefits of this work. If you’re taking psychiatric medications, we strongly encourage discussing your plans with your prescriber before making any changes.
HOW DO I GET STARTED?
The first step is completing a robust screening process to ensure that psilocybin therapy is safe and appropriate for you. This will be conducted by our healing center staff and clinical facilitators, and includes a review of your medical history, mental health background, and current medications.
You can begin by reaching out to Rose Healing Center directly to schedule a discovery call, or by visiting the profile of a facilitator on our website to initiate the screening process with them. Either path will help match you with a facilitator who aligns with your needs and guide you through the next steps.
